There are a number of reasons why poverty has become an epidemic in Africa. Poverty can be the result of political instability, ethnic conflicts, climate change, and other man-made causes. Over the last 30 years, worldwide absolute poverty has fallen sharply (from about 40% to under 20%). But in African countries, the percentage has barely fallen. Still today, over 40% of people living in Africa live in absolute poverty. But one of the most significant causes of poverty in Africa is also the most overlooked…the lack of access to clean drinking water. Nearly one billion people do not have access to clean, safe water – that’s the equivalent of 1 in 8 people on the planet.
Since its formation, Concerned Women of Kono District, Inc. has provided support to impoverished women and children Kono District through the distribution of food, clothing, toilets, educational resources, and shelter. We plan to work closely with partner organizations that are operating on the ground in Kono District in order to receive, process, and distribute the necessary resources. The organization feels that in order to truly accomplish this mission, they need to provide services that are focused on helping those who are most in need. It is our organization’s hope that through our efforts, the segments of the global community that face many hardships can regain a positive outlook on life and a brighter future.
